Odoo 20 is here: new features and opportunities for Mexican companies

Odoo 20 brings AI agents that run processes inside the ERP. What changes, what it costs and what opportunity it opens for your company depending on where you start.

IA que baja fricción en Odoo: documentos, flujos y copilotos (no demos de laboratorio)

Odoo 20 is the version where artificial intelligence stops suggesting and starts operating: its agents now create and update records inside the ERP. For a Mexican company with revenue between 20 and 1,000 million pesos, that changes the question. It's no longer "which ERP should I buy?" but "how ready is my operation for an agent to work on it?"

In short:

  • Odoo 20 was unveiled on September 24, 2026 at Odoo Experience (Brussels), after a preview tour that stopped in Mexico City.
  • The big news: AI agents that run processes described in a single sentence, an MCP connection to external AI tools, offline mode and paying vendors from inside Odoo.
  • The fine print: all AI consumes credits bought separately from licenses, and there are technical changes that break custom modules.
  • If your company is on Odoo 17 or earlier, it no longer has standard support. If you're coming from CONTPAQi, SAI or Microsip, it's a good time to go straight to the newest version.

What Odoo 20 is and when it came out

Odoo 20 is the major release for 2026: Fabien Pinckaers, Odoo's founder and CEO, presented it in the opening keynote of Odoo Experience in Brussels on September 24 (Much Consulting). Odoo turned 20 this year and, for the first time, took its event on tour: Mexico City got an early look at the version during September.

Like every major version, it's available on Odoo Online, Odoo.sh and on-premise, with standard support planned through September 2029 (Nexuro Digital). Odoo only maintains the three most recent versions, so the map looks like this:

The new features that actually change operations

The official notes have hundreds of entries. These are the ones that most affect the day-to-day of a Mexican small or mid-sized business.

1. Agents that run processes. You describe a process in plain language and the agent sets it up and runs it. Odoo's example: when an email with an order arrives, create the sales order, send the customer a confirmation and flag it for review. Agents now create and update records, work from a PDF of instructions and can be triggered by automated or scheduled actions (Nexuro Digital).

2. MCP: Odoo opens up to third-party AI. With Model Context Protocol, an external assistant like Claude or ChatGPT can read and write in your Odoo, always within the permissions of the user it connects as (Keliam). You no longer need a custom connector for every tool.

3. Conversational accounting. You ask the accounting agent about receivables, gross margin or cash flow, and it answers with the figures from your reports. It also audits bank reconciliations and tells you where the error is.

4. Paying vendors from Odoo. You pay individual bills or batches with a single signature, without exporting files to your bank's portal. Add to that line prediction on vendor bills and better duplicate detection. Note: this feature depends on the integration with each bank, so availability in Mexico needs to be confirmed.

5. Offline mode. You can view, create and edit records without internet, and everything syncs when you reconnect. For warehouses with poor signal, field technicians or sales reps on the road, it's probably the change people will notice most.

6. Inventory and manufacturing with memory. Odoo suggests minimums and maximums based on demand history, lets you check inventory as of any past date and updates the cost of goods sold retroactively when freight or the bill arrives at a different price. Manufacturing gets continuous production and work order planning in Kanban and Gantt views (Keliam). For importers, retroactive costing fixes an adjustment that's done by hand at every close today.

7. Sales and website. Commissions calculated on what's been collected rather than what's been invoiced, editable margins on the quote line, and a store that can show prices with VAT to consumers and without VAT to businesses. The website builder generates pages from a prompt and adds llms.txt so AI engines understand your site.

Mexico is among the 55 countries with localization changes in this version (Keliam). What already complied with CFDI 4.0 in Odoo 19 keeps working in Odoo 20.

The fine print

AI is paid by usage. In Odoo 20, every AI feature consumes IAP credits bought separately from licenses. The cost depends on how much the agents work, not on how many users you have: an agent that reviews 40 invoices a month doesn't cost the same as one that reviews 4,000 (Keliam). Before automating, measure consumption with real volume.

Some changes break custom development. Odoo removed record rules (the filter that decides what each user sees) and replaced them with domains on access rights. It also removed tracking values from the chatter and replaced account groups with parent accounts. If you have your own modules or reports that depended on those, they need to be rewritten. The most serious risk is silent: a badly migrated permission doesn't throw an error, it simply shows data to people who shouldn't see it.

Names your team uses every day change. What used to be "In Process" is now "Paid," and what used to be "Paid" is now "Reconciled." Half an hour of training saves weeks of confusion in collections and treasury.

Odoo 17 is out of support. It no longer receives security patches or fixes. In a system that holds your accounting, payroll and customer data, that's a business risk, not an IT issue.

Opportunities depending on where you start

The same version means different things depending on where you are today.

If you're on…

The opportunity with Odoo 20

First step

CONTPAQi, SAI, Bind, Microsip or an old custom system

Jump straight to the newest version, with three years of support ahead and AI already built in

Map what lives in each system and each Excel file before quoting licenses

Spreadsheets, WhatsApp and nothing else

Start with a single system that already includes accounting, inventory, sales and CFDI

Define the 3 processes that consume the most hours today

Odoo 17 or earlier

Close the security risk and, in the same project, clean up customizations you no longer need

Inventory your own modules and integrations; check which ones touch permissions or reports

Odoo 18 or 19

Turn on agents for processes that already work, with no rush to upgrade

Pick one repetitive process and measure what it would cost in credits to automate it

In all four cases, the value isn't in the feature list. It's in how much of your operation already lives inside the system.

The deeper read: an agent is only as good as your data

An agent can only automate a process you know how to describe, on data you trust. If your customers are duplicated, your inventory doesn't add up and half the operation lives in Excel, the agent will make mistakes faster than your team.

That's why at KAI Consulting we see Odoo adoption as a four-step ladder, and Odoo 20 makes the last step reachable for a small or mid-sized business:

  1. Implement Odoo. A first system or a migration from what you have today, with the real operation running inside it.
  2. Odoo as the operational and data hub. Sales, purchasing, inventory and accounting speak the same language; the parallel Excel files go away.
  3. The operation as a data hub. Sources that live outside Odoo (WhatsApp, email, third-party systems) are integrated into one place you can query. That's what we do with KAI Vault.
  4. Agentization. With the previous steps solved, Odoo 20 agents and tools connected through MCP can take on complete processes with traceability.

Most companies that get real value from Odoo 20 in 2027 won't be the ones that turn on AI first. They'll be the ones that get their data in order first.

What to do in the coming weeks

  1. Check which version you're on. If it's Odoo 17 or earlier, schedule the migration this quarter.
  2. List your repetitive processes. Orders that arrive by email, collection reminders, lead assignment: they're the first candidates for an agent.
  3. Set aside a budget for AI credits and measure consumption from the first month, instead of switching AI on everywhere at once.
  4. Get your data in order before automating. Clean catalogs, no duplicate customers, inventory that adds up.
  5. Test on a copy, never in production. Especially if you have custom modules: log in as a user from each profile and check what they can see.

Frequently asked questions

When was Odoo 20 released?

It was unveiled on September 24, 2026 at Odoo Experience in Brussels. Its standard support is planned through September 2029.

Does Odoo 20 issue CFDI 4.0 invoices?

Yes. The Mexican localization that already complied in Odoo 19 keeps working, and Mexico is among the countries with localization updates in this version.

Is Odoo 20's AI included in the license?

No. All AI consumes IAP credits bought separately. The cost depends on actual usage, not on the number of users.

I'm on Odoo 19. Should I upgrade now?

It's not urgent: you have support through September 2028. Upgrade when a specific new feature solves a problem for you, like offline mode or retroactive inventory costing.

I'm on Odoo 17. What happens if I don't migrate?

The system keeps working, but it no longer receives security patches or fixes. It's worth planning the migration in the coming months.

Are AI agents safe?

They can be, if you treat them like any other user: their own user account, minimum permissions and a regular review of what they created or changed. The same applies to any tool connected through MCP.
